History Morlond Azgrim was born and raised in a subterranian trading village populated by Golden Dwarves. He was raised only by his father who worked a town guard – his mother died from disease when he was only 17. During the day, he would work at the local tavern serving ale, clearing tables, and encountering the many adventurers who wandered by. Eventually he became enamored with the lives of such exciting adventurers, but was sorely disappointed when told he was to take over his father’s position as a town guard. However, after surviving the 4-year long training (which focused considerably on slaying aberrations), Morlond only managed to be a town guard for 5 months. One day an (exceptionally intelligent and eloquent) orc managed to convince him that the cage he was transporting, which was full of armored and frenzied orcs, was part of a traveling circus dedicated to promoting positive dwarf-orc relations. Although his mistake was quickly spotted and the orcs immediately slain before they could ransack the city, Morlond was fired. After the event, he was unable to get a job, (he had been coined as Morlond the Moron) and eventually decided to leave the town in order to pursue his dream of adventuring. He left his town and wandered for 10 years with little success of finding treasure, until a lack of resources forced him to settle down again in the town of __, where he once again found employment at the local pub.

Beliefs: Morlond is a knight at heart. He was frequently lectured about the value and necessity of honor, chivalry, and loyalty while living with his father. He sees serving and protecting others as the noblest of all duties a dwarf can accomplish. Sadly, Morlond’s actions will often cause others to doubt his pure intentions. The lack of a motherly figure in his life during his adolescent years has led him to have little common sense, caution, or wariness. Combined with his overly-logical nature and naively idealistic views, this has caused Morlond to be an easy target for manipulation. It is not uncommon for Morlond to contradict himself when presented with a logical argument, and it is even less likely that he realizes he has done such:

“We shall show this criminal in front of the council, for that is the only place where his case will be considered fully and justly. In this way, we will bring upon him the just fate that he deserves, leaving no doubt that petty and malignant attitudes such as his will be tolerated in this noble town!”
“But Morlond, traveling back to the council is two days travel. Surely his comrades in arms will cause much more trouble for the people in that time. We should end his life now so that we can move onward, shielding the people from this man’s allies in crime.”
“You speak the truth. My urgrosh can administer justice swiftly and righteously as well. Surely a trial is unnecessary in such a circumstance as this. Bring him to me.”

Unlike most knights, Morlond does not swear allegiance to one particular kingdom or civilization. Instead, he aims to protect people as a whole, trying to prevent any type of behavior which he deems malignant. That said, Morlond does value loyalty highly, and sees it as a matter of principle that he always keep his word. This also causes issues, as his ego and pride are much bigger than his body and sword; he will commonly promise things which are nearly impossible to achieve.

“After I have persuaded said dragon to part with the portion of his treasure horde which is rightfully yours, good sir, I will return to your side and defend you against any retaliatory onslaught which the dragon’s brood might launch upon thee.”

As a knight, Sir Azgrim has sworn an oath to never strike a foe from a flank, to never destroy a helpless foe and to honorably allow enemies to ready themselves before he attacks. As such, he can be frequently heard on battlefields shouting challenges to worthy adversaries, encouraging enemies to attack him instead of comrades, and even throwing himself in front of attacks targeted at his friends

“Engage me in an honorable duel, so that our allies may see what valor truly looks like!”

Goals: At a very basic level, Morlond simply wants to sustain his existence. While having very noble and lofty goals, he has never been in the best position to achieve these goals. That said, Morlond will never pass up an opportunity to adventure; he revels in exploring the world and spreading his notions of chivalry and courage. He views adventuring as the perfect way of gaining notoriety, so that others will learn from his example.

Role in the Party: Morlond is a tank. With a large amount of hit points, a set of full plate, and a tower shield, he will be very difficult to kill. In order to augment this, he will use his abilities as a knight (specifically test of mettle) to force enemies to attack him, defending his allies from harm and allowing them to maneuver around the battlefield more easily. At higher levels, Morlond will learn to use his Dwarven knowledge of the ground below him to gain bonuses and health while he stays in the same spot. Thus, it will be common for him to charge into battle, taunt foes, and bunker down to absorb the blows directed at him. If this style of combat is not suited to the situation, Morlond can also wield a spiked chain to increase the amount of terrain he threatens. When combined with his knight ability Bulwark of Defense, he will hinder nearby enemies simply with his presence, helping the party gain control of the battlefield.
